Breathing Spirit: The Air-Purifying Shade Inspired by Iranian Architecture

A Gentle Essence of Light and Purity

Inspired by the traditional Iranian architectural ornament called Shabak, designer Ali Mahmoudi has created Breathing Spirit, a latticed, air-purifying shade that brings a spiritual atmosphere and fresh air into homes.

Breathing Spirit is a unique design that combines the aesthetic aspect of light and the purifying aspect of air. Drawing inspiration from Shabaks, latticed windows with special motifs that create remarkable patterns, this shade acts as both an art piece and an air purifier.

One of the standout features of Breathing Spirit is its ability to create a gentle spiritual environment through the play of light and shadow. Inspired by the virtue of light in Iranian architecture, this shade brings a holy essence to any space. Additionally, it acts as an air purifier, treating outdoor air and allowing it to enter polluted city environments.

The shade is made using sustainable materials that can withstand outdoor environments. It consists of a main frame and several modular panels. The frame is constructed from PVC or aluminum, while the panels are multi-layer sandwich panels. The outermost layers are made of PVC, Thermowood, or colored aluminum, depending on the context. The second layer is a reticulated metal sheet coated with TiO2, and the central layer is a reticulated sheet of stainless steel connected to a power source for electrostatics.

Installation of Breathing Spirit is tailored to the size of the window it is placed on. The main frame is 10cm deep, and the panels' width is determined by the window size. Each panel is 20cm high and is positioned at the center of the frame with a margin of 10cm from the top and bottom, and 5cm from each side. The top margin houses the electromechanical equipment, while the bottom margin contains a dumpster for collecting pollutants. The side margins accommodate the mechanisms for adjusting the panels' position.

Interacting with Breathing Spirit is easy and convenient. Users can control the panels via a wall-mounted touch control panel or a remote control. These devices provide information on the position and angle of the panels, as well as the level of dust accumulated on the filters. Users can adjust the panels' position and angle, as well as activate the self-cleaning function of the filters, which vibrates to separate pollutants and collects them in the dumpster below. The user can then manually empty the dumpster.

The Breathing Spirit project was initiated in July 2016 in Tehran, Iran, and was completed in September 2016. It was showcased at the Decoratech convention in September 2016, where it received recognition for its innovative design. This design has also been awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Building Materials and Construction Components category in 2017, highlighting its outstanding creativity and contribution to improving quality of life.

With Breathing Spirit, Ali Mahmoudi has successfully combined functionality with hidden layers of meaning and beauty. This design not only brings a gentle essence of light and purity to any space but also ensures the air we breathe is fresh and clean. It is a symbol of purity and beauty, showcasing the harmonious blend of functionality and emotional design.
